Behind the scenes, as he runs Books & Books, Mitchell Kaplan has been wheeling and dealing, learning the ropes of Hollywood, as he strives to bring a roster of beloved books to the screen. THE MAN WHO INVENTED CHRISTMAS, based on the book of the same name by Les Standiford, is the first of what we hope will be a long line of engaging new films that will have taken their life and inspiration from a book. It’s produced by the Mazur Kaplan Company, a production company founded by Mitchell Kaplan and his partner Paula Mazur in 2006. Together, with the support of Marvin and Isa Leibowitz, they have selectively optioned an extensive roster of wonderful books that are now in various stages of development and production in Hollywood and will soon come to life on both the small and big screen.

No film could signal as serendipitous or more appropriate a beginning for a bookseller turned producer than THE MAN WHO INVENTED CHRISTMAS, an ode to the book, the power of stories, and the writer’s craft. In it, we travel back in time to Charles Dickens’ England and step into the life and mind of the young writer as he courts, wrestles with, and eventually forces, his characters to life on the pages of what is now a timeless classic, A Christmas Carol.

This heart-warming and delightful new movie stars Dan Stevens, Christopher Plummer and Jonathan Pryce, among others, and takes us on a wild journey through the weeks leading up to the publication of Dickens’ holiday ghost story, which as it turns out, was self-published in a race against time and the result of great struggle with inner demons and nagging creditors.

Hats off, to our very own Mitchell for starting his new career in Hollywood with a film that celebrates books and writing with such accuracy and delight. It seems not much has changed in the publishing industry since then; even without social media, Dickens’ A Christmas Carol was an overnight success. So, too, we hope THE MAN WHO INVENTED CHRISTMAS will be greeted with great results at the box office!

THE MAN WHO INVENTED CHRISTMAS will be released by Bleecker Street on 500 screens nationwide on Wednesday, November 22.  Books & Books Customers: WATCH this movie anywhere in Miami-Dade or Broward counties during opening weekend – Wednesday, November 22 through Sunday, November 26 — and bring your ticket/stub to any Books & Books location and you will receive a one-time 20% discount on your entire book purchase.

Please join us for a free panel discussion at Miami Book Fair on Sunday, November 19 at 3pm.

Learn more about how the film came to be at a special panel discussion with the book’s author, Les Standiford; the producers Mitchell KaplanPaula MazurRobert Mickelson; and director Bharat Nalluri.
