Books & Books in Coral Gables
Mitchell Kaplan opened the first Books & Books in 1982 in a small, 500 sq. ft. space in Coral Gables, Florida just after dropping out of law school at the age of 25. The modest bookstore developed a very strong following for our vast collection of books on art, architecture, and photography; creating a literary movement Miami had never seen before. Mitchell’s vision of building an environment where like-minded people could gather, learn and discuss became a reality and it was clear that we had something special.
Today, that reality is still better than the dream. In the spring of 2001, our little shop relocated to an exquisite 1927 building listed in the Coral Gables Register of Historic Places, across the street from the original store. This new space allowed for bigger and better concepts. Today, we host over 60 author events a month, featuring presidents and Nobel prizes winners, athletes and artists, celebrities and poets and a variety of other community-based events.
This is the perfect place to stimulate your mind any day of the week. Enjoy a warm cup of coffee from our delicious café, people watch, or spend hours browsing the shelves – our helpful and knowledgeable staff will welcome you and help make that tough decision of “which one?”. If you’re lucky, you may even catch the man himself sitting at the last table in our café. We promise, he’s got some great suggestions.
We hope you enjoy your visit!
