The wake of an important underground crime boss is dramatically upended when his strong-willed and independent lover reveals herself to the family. She has to fend off the next of kin and eventually a confrontation between wife and lover ensues, but an old debt with the wrong people forces everyone into an uncomfortable alliance in order to prevent dire consequences.
Papi’s Lover, the novel, is a different kind of love story; a gritty work of urban realism that will take us through a whole gamut of emotions. The atmosphere is one of danger and fascination, of illegal activities and rawness. The setting is the bustling streets of New York of the 80’s and it takes a fictional look at the underworld of crime using “La Bolita” and all of its variants, including the criminal enterprise known as The Corporation, as backdrop.
But the novel is much more than a love story; it’s a deconstruction of a sexist culture, an examining of the destruction that a chauvinist paradigm leaves in its wake. The pace is intense, the scenes carefully drawn and crafted, the process is relentless, the ending is inexcusable, and yet, so perfect.
About the Author:
Jorge A. Barriere-Mendez was born in Cuba and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He studied Literature and Philosophy and has published four books: Vacuity in 2003, Shadowboxing in 2015 and Out of the Woods – An Applied Theory of Self in 2016. The first two were collections of short stories, the third one was a quest to find reality, find authenticity and become fearless, and the fourth one is Papi’s Lover, a crime-drama love story.
This controversial writer exposes the underground world of the numbers racket known as “La Bolita”, for which he is no stranger to. Jorge A Barriere-Mendez is probably one of the last surviving old-school “Boliteros” from the 70’s and 80’s era.
