November 6 @ 8:00 pm
Nelson & Alex DeMille
Books & Books and The Miami Book Fair is thrilled to announce that we will be hosting #1 New York Times bestselling author Nelson DeMille, and for the first time with his son, award-winning screenwriter Alex DeMille on Wednesday, November 6, 8pm. The Deserter (Simon & Schuster, $28.99) is a blistering new thriller featuring a brilliant and unorthodox Army investigator, his sharp but troubling new partner, and their hunt for the Army’s most notorious—and dangerous—deserter hiding out in Caracas, Venezuela.
When Captain Kyle Mercer of the Army’s elite Delta Force disappeared from his post in Afghanistan, a video released by his Taliban captors made international headlines. But circumstances were murky: Did Mercer desert before he was captured? Then a second video sent to Mercer’s Army commanders leaves no doubt: the trained assassin and keeper of classified Army intelligence has willfully disappeared.
When, a year later, Mercer is spotted in Caracas, Venezuela by an old army buddy, top military brass task Scott Brodie and Maggie Taylor of the Criminal Investigation Division to fly to Venezuela and bring Mercer back to America—preferably alive. It’s a difficult and dangerous mission, and their partnership isn’t easy—Maggie can’t stand Scott’s bravado, and Scott suspects Maggie is surreptitiously reporting to the CIA. It’s made more difficult by their undeniable romantic chemistry, shady dealings between intelligence agencies, and a desperate city in which no one is safe.
Loosely inspired by the Bowe Bergdahl scandal, The Deserter takes readers inside one of the most dangerous places in the world—only the second setting in Nelson’s twenty-one book career that was too dangerous for him to research in person. And it introduces a brilliant cast of new characters whose intelligence, romantic tension, and biting humor showcase Nelson at his best and signal an exciting breakout talent in Alex. It’s the first in a timely and thrilling new series from an unbeatable team of true masters.
