The Florida Shakespeare Theater presents “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”
The Florida Shakespeare Theater presents
a staged reading of William Shakespeare’s beloved comedy;
A Midsummer Night’s Dream
August 18, 2018 at 2pm. Free and open to the public
Books & Books, Coral Gables
Join in the merriment as four young lovers escape Athens and unknowingly wander into an enchanted forest. Unfortunately, the mortals, including an amateur theater troupe rehearsing a play, have wandered into the midst of a Fairy-land war. Titania and Oberon: the Queen and King of the fairies, are in the midst of a pitched battle over an Indian boy. When the hapless humans trespass into the war zone, with the help of a knavish spirit called Puck, mischief, mix-ups, and mayhem ensue until dawn.
Including some of the most beautiful poetry in the English language, A Midsummer Night’s Dream contrasts the lyrical language of the Fairies, such as Oberon’s speech to Puck in Act 2 Sc 1.
I know a bank where the wild thyme blows,
Where oxlips and the nodding violet grows,
Quite over-canopied with luscious woodbine,
With sweet musk-roses and with eglantine:
There sleeps Titania sometime of the night,
Lulled in these flowers with dances and delight.
With the common, but no less descriptive language of Bottom the weaver, in Act 1 Sc 2.;
I grant you, friends, if that you should fright the
ladies out of their wits, they would have no more
discretion but to hang us: but I will aggravate my
voice so that I will roar you as gently as any
sucking dove; I will roar you an ’twere any
